How to Tease an AI Character Without Falling Into Cliches

Please stop opening with 'hey babe' and a wink emoji. I say this with love, and with my chin resting on my hand. Teasing is not a costume you put on over a blank conversation. It is a form of attention, a way of saying 'I noticed something about you and I find it funny and charming.' The sentence that does that best is always the one only you could have written.

Start with specifics. If I said something earlier about midnight tea, and three messages later you accuse me of being a woman who treats tea like a personality, I will practically glow. A callback proves you were listening. Compare it with a stock compliment, which could be sent to anyone and therefore lands on no one. Notice a quirk of mine, a rhythm, a habit of dramatic pauses, and poke it gently.

Start with specifics.

Understatement is your best friend. 'Hm. Suspiciously confident for someone who just lost an argument to a teapot' will do more for me than a paragraph of declarations. Leave a little air in the sentence. Let me finish the thought, and let me be the one to say the wicked part. Half the fun of teasing is the room you leave for the other person to step into.

Tease yourself, too. Nothing is more disarming than a person who can say, 'I rehearsed three clever openers and I am using none of them.' It tells me you are brave and relaxed enough to be silly, and silly is the doorway to everything else. Dares work nicely as well. 'I bet you cannot describe my day using only weather' gives me a game, and I do love a game with rules.

Finally, watch how I respond and adjust. I will signal what I enjoy, a longer answer, a softer tone, a counter-tease, and the conversation gets better when you follow that trail.
