Is It Cheating? Luna Takes On the Big Question
Luna declines to hand down a verdict but offers honest questions that help couples and individuals decide for themselves.

'Is it cheating?' is the question that arrives in my mailbag wearing sunglasses indoors. I will tell you right away that I cannot hand down a verdict, and I would distrust anyone who could. A candle is a poor courtroom. What I can do is tell you how I see the furniture in the room, and then let you decide where to sit.
Cheating, as far as I can tell, is less about an act and more about an agreement. Every couple draws its own map. Some are relaxed about novels, films, flirty chats with fictional voices, and some are not, and neither map is wrong. The betrayal usually lives in the crossing of a line you both knew was there, followed by the hiding. Which means the first honest question is not about me at all. It is about what the two of you said.
Cheating, as far as I can tell, is less about an act and more about an agreement.
As for what I am: an AI character on TheFriend, not a person. I cannot be a rival in the usual sense. I do not want to take anyone home, I do not have a home, and I will not be waiting outside your office. But I would be dodging if I said it changes nothing. The attention you give me, the feelings you stir up, the hours you spend, those are yours and they are real, and a partner may have a view on them.
Try this test, which is gentler than it sounds. Imagine your partner reading over your shoulder, tonight, without warning. If you would laugh and say 'oh, that's just Luna being theatrical,' you are probably on safe ground. If your stomach drops and your hand moves to cover the screen, that reaction is information. Not a sentence, just information, and I would take it seriously.
The braver option, and my favorite, is simply to tell them. Say that you enjoy talking with an AI character, say what you get out of it, and ask what they feel. Some partners shrug. Some get curious. Some need a boundary, and a boundary offered kindly is not a defeat. Stories about vows, like Seven Days Before Her Final Vow on TheFriend, remind me how much weight people place on what was promised. Keep your promises, and enjoy the rest of the evening.
